Joseph Eye Hospital:
A Unique Eye Care System

Welcome to Joseph Eye Hospital, where vision care goes beyond treatment to encompass a holistic approach to eye health and rehabilitation. Founded on the visionary principles of Dr. Joseph Gnanadickam, our hospital is more than just a medical institution; it's a sanctuary for healing, learning, and empowerment for persons with disabilities.

What makes us different

Our Unique features

  • A Legacy of Care and Empowerment

Dr. Joseph Gnanadickam's founding vision was not only to provide exemplary eye care but also to ensure that individuals with blindness could lead a life of independence and dignity. This vision gave birth to the first of our rehabilitation initiatives, the Bishop Diehl Rehabilitation Home for the Blind (BDRH). Established in 1967 as a pioneering effort in the realm of rehabilitation, BDRH exemplifies our commitment to integrating visually impaired individuals back into the mainstream community with confidence and skill.

  • Bishop Diehl Rehabilitation Home for the Blind (BDRH)

Offering vocational training in various trades such as candle making, caning, screen printing, and envelope making, BDRH provides its inmates with not just skills, but a pathway to independence. Our collaboration with local rehabilitation departments opens up employment opportunities, ensuring a bright future for our graduates

  • Low Vision Enhancement Department (LVED)

Recognizing the importance of maximizing remaining vision, our Low Vision Enhancement Department (LVED) offers specialized services aimed at improving visual acuity. Through personalized training and innovative approaches, we help individuals with low vision enhance their ability to perform daily activities, thereby significantly improving their quality of life.

  • Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Program

The CBR program has the distinction as the first comprehensive rehabilitation programs in whole of Asia. It was initiated by Mr.Bob Jackel an expert from Philippines. Our CBR program extends our reach beyond the hospital walls, serving individuals with multiple disabilities in the community. This program, based in Musiri taluk of Tiruchirappalli district, embodies a holistic approach to rehabilitation, including microcredit schemes to support the financial independence of physically challenged individuals and their families.

  • Inclusive Eyecare

JEH integrates inclusivity into every aspect of our operations—from the design of our accessible facilities equipped with ramps, tactile paths, and Braille signage, to our comprehensive staff training programs that enhance understanding and sensitivity towards the needs of all individuals. Our commitment to inclusivity is not only reflected in our efforts to adapt our environment and educate our team but also recognized at the state level, where JEH has been honored with awards for our inclusive practices. At JEH, we strive to be a model of inclusive eye care, ensuring that every patient experiences a supportive and dignified visit.
