Vision Restoration

JEH Eye bank, is committed to restoring vision and changing lives. Our Eyebank in the heart of Tamilnadu is a beacon of hope for those seeking the gift of sight. The eye banking started in 1979, which is one of the oldest in the state, used to receive donated eyes from Srilanka by flight. Over 30 years, our center has evolved to a full-fledged cornea retrieval and Eye Bank handling about 500 corneas a year.India needs approximately 20,000 corneal transplants performed annually, However, the availability falls significantly short, with only around 10,000 corneas being donated each year. This huge gap highlights the pressing demand for corneas, as numerous individuals who are blind waiting for vision-restoring transplants.

What's Real?

Myth busters

  • Eye donation can only benefit a limited age group.

Busted: People of all age can donate. Advances in medical technology allow transplants from donors of different age groups, contributing to the restoration of vision for recipients.

  • Eye donation delays funeral arrangements.

Busted: This is not true. The eye donation process is quick (typically takes around 15-20 minutes) and does not cause any significant delay in funeral arrangements.

  • People with certain medical conditions cannot donate their eyes.

Busted: In many cases, this is a misconception. While some medical conditions may disqualify a person from donating other organs, most of us can donate. Even individuals who have undergone eye surgeries, persons with diabetes or hypertension can donate their eyes. Each case is assessed individually.

  • Eye donation is against religious or cultural beliefs.

Busted: This is a myth. In reality, many religions and cultures support the noble act of eye donation as a selfless and compassionate gesture. It aligns with the principles of self-sacrifice and helping others, promoting the well-being of the community.
