Background

Optometry is emerging as one of the leading eye health services in India with enormous career opportunities.

The primary aim is to achieve the highest quality vision training in order to facilitate the early detection and diagnosis of eye diseases and to identify their successful treatment.

JEH’s College of Optometry runs a stimulating, flexible optometry degree course which arms students with the necessary scientific and clinical knowledge to undertake the refraction course allowing them to become fully qualified practicing optometrists.

Who is an Optometrist?

Optometrists are well qualified and adequately trained to prescribe glasses, and treat external eye diseases. They are trained in contact lens fitting and so also manage optical workshop including grinding, surfacing and fitting. They can be delegated with almost 60% of ophthalmologist’s functions, thus relieving the surgeons to concentrate on management of eye diseases and perform more surgeries. They can significantly contribute to the understanding of incidence and prevalence of eye diseases, eye health planning, service delivery and outcomes of intervention.

Avenues for career development

This B.Opt Course is so designed that personnel can independently function after graduation as Optometrist in Hospitals and Optical Shops where they are well sought out or they can be independently involved in private practice which is lucrative. Optometrists have great carrier Opportunity not only in India but also in Far East and Middle East countries

In education M.Phil and doctoral level study programs are presently available who set their career aspiration in Optometry.

  2. Assists ophthalmologists in hospitals/clinics
  3. Practice in optical establishments/optical shops
  4. Academic institutions including teaching and research
  5. Offer clinical services to multinationals dealing with manufacturing and distribution of ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses and ophthalmic instruments

Optical lens industries, contact lenses, and allied products like Bausch & Lamb, Johnson and Johnson, etc., employ optometrists as lens care consultants in professional services.

COURSES AND CALENDAR FOR ADMISSION

Presently we offer Bachelor in Optometry Course – 20 students per year.

Duration:3 years + 1 year internship
Eligibility:Should be at least 17 years old as on December 31st 2021 Should have completed school with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Should have scored above 65%.
Admission:Admission will be made based on the marks obtained in 11th and 12th standard adhering strictly to the rules and regulations laid down by the TN Dr. MGR Medical University.
