St. Luke Eye Hospital

Virudhunagar district is in the southern part of Tamilnadu. This district records a population of 15.5 Lakh who are mainly involved in household industries because being a dry and hard land surface which makes intensive agriculture merely impossible. The district has 597 villages which are divided in to 8 Taluks. Sivakasi is one of the towns in this district which is known world over for the production of Fire Crackers.

St' Luke Eye Hospital was established in 1994 under the aegis of Christoffel Blinden Mission with a bed strength of 50. This hospital was commissioned with the aim of providing eye care services to the community of Virudhunagar district. The hospital is under the management of Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church. The administration of the hospital was transferred to the Joseph Eye Hospital, Tiruchirapalli in 1999.

This centre caters to the combination of middle and lower middle-class population, this facility reaches 3,759 patient visits, of 240 major surgeries and 10 minor surgeries were performed. In awareness programmes 882 people were identified for treatment.
